Where’s that Aussie film go-go?

Beer Taste Test 377
Rubbel Sexy Lager
Belgium
5/10
I’d have to say the standout feature of this beer is the label. Along side the relevant information is an attractive lady in swimwear. The swimwear is, of course made of a “scratchy” type substance which when attacked with a nail or coin reveals the lady’s inner most secrets. And funnily enough, the secret as to why so many men drink beer; which is…
And the beer tastes like…you know, I’ve already forgotten.
I saw Paul Serio in Keating the Musical the other night. Five days before I saw him in the film, Running on Empty. He’s great in the musical, but the star of the movie is the big go-go Falcon GTHO.
Running on Empty is a genre film when Australian film-makers could make genre films. Before funding was attached to wank and stepping into the real world meant you’d be laughed out of the Balmain Club.
Which I also refer to as the ½ mile Club – as in wank.
There’s a token ethnic character in Running on Empty, which probably meant they needed government funding – but it’s got way-good legs to carry 88 minutes. And Max Cullen is on-song.
The only dodgy thing is Deborah Conway’s hair – can anyone put the 80s before a war-crimes tribunal.
charged with crimes against humanity…
Guilty as charged, sentenced to be wiped from history…
Sad, because she’s great. In art not many people walk through disciplines with such ease – can sing, can act....
Anyway, I guess I walked away from Running on Empty with one fact etched in my brain, like a burnout left on Nanna’s Victa-mowed lawn; if you made the same film today, but instead of V8s you had HOT FOURS – you’d have a winner. Bigtime.
8 Mile did over $16 million in Aus – who says genre doesn’t work?
But hey, what they had then and we don’t have now is film-makers with balls enough to see that.
Or an industry to support that.
Or the motivation to get some go-go behind a film that entertains without chucking in tourist-shop Aussie cultured-ethno slide-of-hand junko.
You know what I mean.
Until next time and happy film-making.
