What's With Film Festivals?
November 27th 2006 02:13
kryz says his ten best Australian films of all time would have to be;
-Ghosts... of the Civil Dead
-Lantana
-Mad Max
-Alexandra's Project
-Dead Calm
-Everynight...Everynight
-Romper Stomper
-Picnic at Hanging Rock
-Body Melt
People are always stopping Duke and me in the street and asking us what we think of film festivals.
We have one rule.
We never enter any of our films in festivals that have an entry fee. The way I figure it; if we don’t make money, why should they make it off us.
Some people reckon that’s a bit limiting, but let me tell you – our films have shown all over the world. We’ve had great screenings in international festivals that cater to our target audience – worldwide, as well as here at home.
People also ask us what we think about Tropfest.
Not Much.
I think big-hype festivals like Tropfest send the wrong message. They say that the best way to get a leg-up in the film industry is to win some lah-de-dah high profile cry-baby festival.
Who are the judges?
Cry-babies.
What’s the criteria?
Be like them.
What’s the point?
The real-world point is; the only way to succeed in this business is to work hard and smart. Know your target market and make films you want and can move.
Let the latte-sipping heroes enter the show-off festivals.

Until next time and happy film-making.
