The claim we hold is as good as gold...

And this week’s pub quiz bonus round question is: On what date was Johnny Cash born?
Well? You don’t know, dear readers? Ok, I can’t be sure on the year, but I know for a fact he’s a Pisces. Born on February, 26th. Much like Buffalo Bill, Fats Domino, Levi Strauss and Victor Hugo. Bit like me, really.
What, you don’t care about Johnny Cash? Well you should! He sang those legendary words: ‘The claim we hold is as good as gold, Bonanza. Hand in hand we built this land, the Ponderosa ranch.’
Ah, see, now you’re interested! And in that case, may I just recommend you watch ‘Walk the Line’.
It has Waaaa-keeen Phoenix playing the man himself. And doesn’t he look remarkably like Mr. Johnny Cash?! The film took a long time for me to take off. But to be honest, it’s also stuck with me since I watched it a few days ago. I had no idea how messed up Johnny Cash really was. I always assumed everyone who shared my birthday was a Saint. Like me.
But even though slow, long and full of strong American accents, ‘Walk the Line’ imparts a profound sense of uneasiness and sadness in you so you end up going through all the ups and downs with Johnny. The film tugs at your emotions somewhat.
Portrayed fairly subtly, the first thing Johnny encounters is the cutting in half of his beloved big brother Jack, when Johnny is just a 9-year old kid. Followed by his father’s rant that ‘God took the wrong son’.
And so Johnny continues stumbling on through life, never quite truly happy. Unless he’s with the love of his life June Carter. But she takes years of persuasion, numerous ups and downs and at least 600 marriage proposals before she finally becomes June Carter-Cash.
The film ends there, but Johnny and June stayed together until their dying days- they both died within 3 months of each other, both in their 70s. So perhaps love does conquer all?
And on the subject of June Carter, let me give a quick mention to Ms Reese Witherspoon. I have never taken much notice of her, although I am fully aware that she has always been lurking in the background. Do you know what I mean? No? Ok, let’s take ‘Pleasantville’, for example. The romantic Fish in me absolutely adores that film! But not because of Reese Witherspoon. I love that film because of the idea; the vomit-inducingly sweet notion. Come to think of it, who was the nerd in ‘Pleasantville’? Was it Tobey ‘Spiderpig’ Maguire?
Anyhoo, ‘Legally Blonde’. There she is again. Playing a blonde airhead. And if you’d said to me it was Alicia Silverstone or Kirsten Dunst or Renee Zellwegger playing the main part in that film, I’d probably have agreed without giving it another thought.
But you see, in ‘Walk the Line’, Reese Witherspoon actually acts. She physically feels the pain that Johnny feels (and thanks to director James Mangold, I as the viewer felt throughout the two and a bit hours of the film).
So the next time you find yourself in the Northern Hemisphere of this beautiful planet and the calendar is telling you it’s the 26th February and you are cold, feeling in need of a warming drink- raise your glass to Miss Fish on Film’s birthday (thank you, I love you too!) and the birthday of the legend that is Mr. Johnny Cash. And of course all those who so beautifully put his life on film. Love & Peace from FoF. x
