Ten Best Aussie Films

People are constantly asking me to name the ten best Australian films of all time. While I don’t like criticising other film-makers, I can see why people would value my opinion. I am, after all, a member of that small group of Australian film-makers who don’t use government money – but let’s not dwell on my achievements. As I’m often found doing at my local Lawn Bowling Club, in addition to helping them deplete their supply of lager.

Thin Billy, who doesn’t bowl anymore and is pushing eighty tells me about all the great Aussie films – Chips this, Dad and Dave that and how he loves Gallipoli. I told him how I’d shot the opening nude scene for Bloodspit.
“Did you see her shame?” He asked me.
“Full frontal nude – it’s all there, Thin Billy,” I said, as he started to shake.
Nudity is about art. Not about old pervies in raincoats. Well, maybe that’s not all-together true. Copping a good eye-full of Joe Dallesandro or Sharon Stone is a nice way to spend two hours – but alas, I’ve drifted from my original theme.

The ten best Australian films of all time;
- Walkabout, 1971 Nicholas Roeg
- Stone, 1974 Sandy Harbutt
- The Cars That Ate Paris, 1974 Peter Wier
- Sunday Too Far Away, 1975 Ken Hannman
- The Man From Hong Kong, 1975 Brain Trenchard Smith

- Don’s Party, 1976 Bruce Beresford
- Fantasm, 1976 Richard Bruce (Richard Franklin)
- The FJ Holden, 1977 Michael Thornhill
- Mad Max, 1979 George Miller
- Bliss, 1985 Ray Lawrence

Until next time and happy film-making.

Hello

This is a great question that has got me thinking, just off the top of my head I thought of:

Somersault - very atmospheric
Lantana
Head On
Two Hands
Little Fish
Look Both Ways
Japanese Story
Kiss or Kill
Shine
Picnic at Hanging Rock

Good list Fish, some great ones.

A few faves you didn't mention:
Peter Weir's The Last Wave or Picnic at Hanging Rock or Gallipoli
Ralph de Heer's The Tracker or Alexandra's Project
Breaker Morant
Fred Schepsi's The Chant Of Jimmy Blacksmith or Devils Playground

Maybe not the best but I have to salute Undead Turkey Shoot and Patrick for their place in trash heaven.

Keep up the good work.

Ghosts Of The Civil Dead totally slipped my mind as well, a prophetic film. When it was made it was fiction, now it is fact.
The John Hilcoat/Nick Cave work The Proposition was also a moddy aussie entry.

Ah yes, I'd add The Proposition to my list too, thanks for the reminder, John.

Sorry to be so predictable, but I'll always love The Castle. It's the first Aussie movie I watched when I came here, and I couldn't believe how brilliantly written it was.
