Stomping on Toyo
February 4th 2007 23:55
Recently I met this guy who’s way into Japanese cinema. He’s got a great collection of Japanese films and we spent at least 15 minutes on Godzilla – go-go the lizard. I’ve got this photo of the actor half out of his Godzilla suit taking a smoke break.
Anyway, we made this connection while talking about the state of the Australian film industry. Ten minutes into it – when discussing the Australian film industry it’s always hard to decide wether to hold back the tears or simply blow out your brains. So he says;
“I remember when the best way to swindle funding was to put…”
And at the same time we both said;
“…Bill Hunter in your film.”
Yeah, those were the days.
I love it when you meet someone and make a connection.
It’s like when you go to a caravan park and out of all the people there waving flags and swapping lawn mowing stories – one will truly appreciate the concept of living in aluminium.
Anyway, with my new film friend I promised to pass on my VHS copy of the early 60s live-action Astro Boy movie.
No that’s art.
And it’s guaranteed not to have Bill Hunter in it.
Until next time and happy film-making.
