Review of Polanski’s Macbeth

Polanski's Macbeth
Polanski's Macbeth

I remember hearing this young talented artist being interviewed. Can’t remember who it was – what is that with memory loss? He was asked what the highlight in his remarkable career had so far been.

He said;

The weekend I spent at the Playboy mansion.

Hugh Heffner – I love the man. That 70s velvet waterbed theme he had going – that should be in a museum of modern art, somewhere. But then I think the whole of Saudi Arabia is like that now.

Anyway, Hugh Hefner had the go-go to finance Polanski’s version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
And what a great version.
Sure, you get the cry-babies going on about how there’s too much blood n’ guts and how the hardcore detracts from the point.
That’s crap.
That’s the art in this film.
While the la-de-dahs gloss over history the fact is, the good ol’ days were more about bad hygiene and less about period costumes, jewels and tassels. Perfume hid stinky bodies, spices covered off meat and anyone over twenty-five had a head full of rubbish-truck smelling teeth like a B-grade horror show.

So it’s real. And themes like deluded arrogance, blind ambition, misguided historical interpretation shine through – hey, sounds like the modern world.

It’s true, Polanski had his issues when he made this film. And he does change Shakespeare’s ending along those lines - but this is a brilliant Shakespearian interpretation.

It’s a great film.
And Francesca Annis is so hot it’s unbelievable.

And remember, the most important thing Shakespeare offers us as a way of understanding the art of performance is;

the aim is to entertain

play to your audience.

Until next time and happy film-making.

I saw this in class and thought it was pretty good... the scene with the coven of nude old witches was pretty shocking, though...
