Review of Fists of Fury
March 5th 2007 00:33
I met this guy who was a reporter working in Hong Kong during the 70s.
My first question;
Bruce Lee – what’s the story?
He told me he was at the inquest into this death. Official verdict;
severe reaction to headache medication…
James Coburn once asked Bruce Lee about his one-inch punch. Like, if it really was that effective. I remember hearing him describe how Lee showed him – one inch away from his chest then, Ka-pow Coburn’s across the room and on his arse.
The lesson here is;
legend is earned
To the movie.
This film is good vs evil done the way it should be. The American Western does it with Drive-thru fat fries smutch. Fists of Fury is how the West should have been won.

Not bad, medium strength, nice taste of malt, rice etc. But I wouldn’t say my taste buds lit up cigarettes after the experience.
Unlike a Bruce Lee movie.
In art there are people who have created milestones. Jimi Hendrix, Bret Whitely, Lee Marvin, John Belushi, Johnny Holmes, Anna Nicole Smith and Wally Lewis to name but a few.
Bruce Lee, like the others knew his genre, knew his target market and knew how to entertain.
In Fists of Fury he looses a lot of friends and relatives to the mangled mad mind of the big bad Bossman.
“Hey people disappear all the time – they’re probably drunk somewhere.”
Mr Lee snaps, having held on to a promise he made to his uncle – no fighting, be nice. Don’t you just hate that honour thing. I guess Westerners have it – like it’s when your cousin hits on you and you say; thanks but no-thanks, anyway, I have to change the tyres on the caravan.
But every man has his limit. Mr Lee eventually embarks on a one man marathon of revenge. He has help, but it’s all high-kicking Lee one-way traffic into hellsville for the Bossman’s henchmen.
Violence is less ugly when it’s justified and even more attractive when it involves the martial arts – yes, it is an art.
And no artist was better at it than Mr Bruce Lee.
And there is a great sex scene as well.
Until next time and happy film-making.

Fist of Fury aka The Chinese Connection marked Bruce Lees first starring role....the remake Fist Of Legend starring jet Li is cool too...the dojo battle in both are astounding.
