Nuclear monster babies

Which way to Balmain
Which way to Balmain

While reading Vietnam Diary by war corespondent Richard Tregaskis I came across a classic film quote. He asks a helicopter pilot if he saw the movie showing in the hanger the night before. The pilot says he didn’t because;

It was one of those English jobs about all them women got pregnant with that monster – nuclear physics and all that junk.

Sounds like a film with go-go to me.

I recently saw the film, Babel. It won Best Director at Cannes when Duke and I were there. It’s a great film but I didn’t enjoy it. It’s funny, sometimes you can see powerful films like that and they reflect positively on your own life. You walk away with something. Other times you just get left with this deep sadness. I guess it’s a time-of-life thing. Right now the message I need is nuclear monster babies.

Anyway, Kate Blanchett was in Babel and rightly or wrongly she always reminds me of Balmain. Which brings me to the obituary in today’s Sydney Morning Herald. Hard man writer Robert English (1936-2007) has gone to his great reward and this little gem reflects on a life bathed in go-go.

He would go out of his way to offend people he perceived to be impostors and phonies. Some of these people he hurt, something he grew to regret later in his life. His “impostors list” frequently updated and circulated to friends and associates, was English’s continuing observation on the hypocrisy he saw in Australian society.

Until next time and happy film-making.

I definitely think Babel needed more monsters. I personally find that morbid-worthy-realism a bit of a drag. Babel, like Eight Grams, just got me depressed. I think the best way to deal with the tragedy and morbidity that is the reality of everyday life on this dark planet is to laugh at it. That's why Shakespeare put so many jokes in Hamlet. Babel needed more wordplay and jokes, that's what Will would have done. This is the logic behind my upcoming play "9/11 Conspiracy: The Musical." Does anyone want to film it?
