Motivation.
In the film industry it’s all about “what’s my motivation”.
I remember someone asked Lee Marvin what his motivation was.
He said;
“Thursday.”
Because it was pay day.
Beautiful. I love Lee Marvin. He used to kill big fish to relax.
Marvin’s best performance; Liberty Valance in Who Shot Liberty Valence.
You can go to drama-school and learn how to act or you can just be born with the gift. Marvin was a natural.
He once went out drinking with Oliver Reed in Mexico. He’d heard about Reed’s reputation and paced him drink for drink, thinking he wasn’t that hard. Then after Reed had done a handstand on one of the tables and fallen into a crowd of Mexican gun-wielding bandits – he realised Reed had been drinking triples to his one.
Reed’s best performance; Gladiator, saved that movie.
Duke and I act in our movies because we can’t afford to pay real actors. And also there’s never a proper script so we’re the only ones who know the story.
Can I act?
I’ve got no idea but I can make people laugh, so I guest that’s a good start.
I saw Jaws the other day. Robert Shaw steals the show big-time. What is it with men who love boats? When a film producer scores a performance like that, it’s a beautiful experience. In Bloodspit Co Co Mangina plays Doctor Ludvick’s mother. He steals the show. But then again, you put a big man in a dress and you can’t loose. After we shot the bathroom scene I was speechless. Not unlike, I imagine Spielberg was with Shaw.
Many people think there’s little art in genre film-making but let me tell you – there is. And moments like that is my motivation.
Until next time and happy film-making.
