Leon’s Guerilla Film-making Checklist
February 19th 2007 01:24
It’s only fair to do a Guerilla version of the film-makers checklist. In fact, the following list is almost my autobiography. Was it that easy? Do I really love beer that much? Have I ever met Bill Hunter?
- Try and finish high school. While no-one wants to be a nerd you need some starting point. Cos, when you add that to the hours you’ve spent watching movies – you’ve got the extra go-go.
- Watch the type of movies you want to make. It’s not about copying – it’s about getting the go-go.
- Get some technical nous. You don’t have to go to a film school but you have to get on top of what everyone is using to make films.
- Get into a network – in Cannes they call it schmoozing. You don’t have to hang with the cry-babies but you do have to get out and about. Ask questions – it’s the fastest way to learn.
- Remember the old-school facts on film-making. It’s all about entertainment. Script, script, script. You’ve got at least 75 minutes to fill and no-one pays to be bored. Unless they’re wearing leather.
- Meet the people you need to meet. Creating good scripts and making films is more about anthropology than cocktail parties. Know your audience and know the people you are writing about. Like, don’t ever write about a sexworker until you’ve actually met one.
- Once you’ve finished use the internet to get your film out and about. The whole world is there and waiting. Don’t pick the wanky festivals go for what gets the ground-buzz happening and is aimed point blank at your target market.
- The more you create the more you achieve.
- Lastly, always remember; without beer there is no art.
Until next time and happy film-making.
