Leon’s Film School Cry-baby Checklist
February 16th 2007 08:54
Big Jed - love the man.
If I wanted to be a complete bastard I could do a cry-baby checklist that would be the roadmap to – not world peace, but a career in the Australian film industry.
Then I did it.
- Do arts at high school making sure you dress like you are into arts. Caution: you may get beaten up regularly.
- While at high school volunteer for work in the library. Later on when you seek funding, these are the type of people you will have to deal with. Get used to it.
- After high school do a BA majoring in film or enter a mainstream film school. When you enter the film industry you will have to deal with many people who do not have this level of education. Volunteering in a soup kitchen will prepare you for this.
- While still in tertiary education make short films that impress your friends and relatives. Pay special attention to themes like sophistication and Australism.
- Once you have finished your education find a job, any job in the industry. Your aim is to move fast and up. Your time will be taken up mostly by sucking up (called networking) and making short films that you enter into high profile cry-baby festivals (Tropfest). At this point it would also be good to do a wine appreciation course.
- Combine what success you have amassed and start your government funding campaign for a full feature. Remember, it’s all about them so the pitch is always what you can do for them. Research is essential as “pet issues” change regularly.
- Lastly, move to Balmain.
Until next time and happy film-making.

How much does a place in Balmain go for these days?
