League of our own
June 29th 2007 04:02
Once a month I meet with a bunch of like minded people. We’ve formed our own league, our motto is; without beer there is no art. As it’s a secret organisation we used to switch locations each time until we discovered the local R.S.L club.
And stepping into an R.S.L club is like entering another world – like an airport except most of the patrons aren’t travelling to a different place, they’re heading for the next life.
Anyway.
I don’t mind being round aged citizens. The film industry was built for all the people we now call old. Good ol’ entertainment where distraction was 9/10 the box-office law. And still is. Punters love being transported into the world of fantasy or unreality – in art but also everyday life. Just look at Mundine’s entrance for his last fight – sitting on a throne carried in by six gladiators surrounded by a gaggle of supporters and wearing a crown, like the apocalyptic Brando running his own sect - now that’s entertainment.
I read some film-school yo-yo going on about;
Australia is such a small market and everyone is fighting over a small audience…
So then, why is it that Pirates Three can pull 27 mil and Shrek Three 25 mil – both at the same time and it isn’t even school holidays.
Maybe it’s because they’re made by people who know what their audience wants, rather than what they think they should be watching.
Which seems to be what they teach at film-school downunder.
A few hours in an R.S.L club might help.
Until next time and happy film-making.
