Keeping the dream alive

Nice to see the Federal Treasurer Pete, “the man who would be King only if” Costello reads this blog. The 07 budget reintroduces tax breaks attempting to revive the local film industry. Sort of like a defribulator – 1, 2, 3 CLEAR.
Well done. Like I say; tax breaks are better than grants because they actually encourage film-makers to get-up and enter the real world rather than asking Mummy and Daddy (the Government) for hand-outs. Apparently they teach people how to do that, I think it’s called;
How to successfully apply for your government grant…
Your grant, like anyone really deserves money they haven’t earned.
Anyway, now all we need are film-makers with go-go enough to take advantage.
One step at a time.
But what if you were putting money into other people’s films, Leon…
People often ask me – what films would I finance.
Right now I wouldn’t be putting money into Big Baz’s Australia – not because I think the grey hair thing is too Balmain, but because I think any film with Australia in the title is a little like a Chinese moonlanding – there’s no go-go.
What I’d be doing and this is a free-bee to any film-maker with go-guts – I’d be putting up-front money for a full feature of Cougar Man. That’s right, the guy in the TV commercials. You get 80 minutes of that guy doing a Man from Hong Kong-like feature and you’ve got gold, gold, gold. Green and gold - gold without kangaroos. Get this, he drives round in a Ford XC coupe’, only the top’s been chopped off to give it that Monaco look.
Anyway, Duke & Leon’s Filmschool update;
There are rumblings that Channel 31 in Brisbane might pick up series one which means there might be enough go-go to do a second series. That also means that another roadtrip may come into play. Our good friends at PolyEster Books in Melbourne have invited Duke and me down for a film shoot. What a great location - Brother Gonzo and crew are wild enough for a good ten minutes in the can. Maybe we can get a tax break to pay for the beer and pizza. We’re thinking the train might be the best travel option, the Falcon would need autopilot and we’ve gone off flying – hey, after sixty hours on that Cannes thing – there and back, I’ve moved on from aviation.
Until next time and happy film-making.
