Heroes

I was at a party the other night, the photographer Lewis Morley was there. I was sitting across from him but I didn’t say anything. He was draped in fans and I always think you should never meet your heroes. And he is a hero of mine. That 1963 shot of Christine Keeler changed my life. Sense I first saw it I’ve always tried to capture that beautiful moment of sexy in my work – but somehow most of the time all I end up with is smutty.
While many grew up reading Lady Chatterley’s Lover I was flicking through Hustler.
While many were watching Last Tango In Paris I was watching Fantasm.
As an actor John Holmes (the now dead porn star) had few equals. As a social entity he was a square peg trying to fit in a round hole.
Poor ol’ Johnny Holmes.
I remember watching a screening of Fantasm, the 1976 Australian soft-core porn film. It was a full house. In a scene that does more for fruit salad than any cry-baby TV chef, John Holmes plays the staring role. He starts off in the swimming pool and slowly walks up and out. As he does he eventually reveals his manhood, resulting in hysterical applause and shouting from the audience present in the tiny cinema. I think someone even started a small Mexican wave.
It’s not often I’m humbled in the presence of cinematic greatness. I was crying as I stood up and along with the crowd acknowledged his legendary status.
Until next time and happy film-making.
