If the frozen wasteland that is the Australian film industry was ever going to be fixed, sending more people to filmschool is defiantly not the way. What the industry needs is more entrepreneurs and sadly, you can’t teach people to be entrepreneurial.
Recently I came across a compilation of short films on video. Basic enough sort of theme – boy meets girl and they have wild sex. Variations included; two girls meet boy and they have sex. Lots of sex and in lots of different ways. For quite a while. But what struck me was the fact that the male star, Peter North is also the director and producer. That’s today thinking. That’s entrepreneurial. And that’s independent film-making at its best.
Peter North, star of over 1000 adult movies and successful independent film-maker – he’s the sort of person that should be teaching at filmschool. Not big cry-babies who’ve only ever made boring short films paid for by you – assuming you pay tax. But he’s not Australian and he doesn’t teach at filmschool.
Frequently I have described the Australian film industry as follows;
Let’s say the Australian Government pays you to grow watermelons. They pay you five dollars for each watermelon which they then sell for three dollars. They like you to grow watermelons because every country wants a healthy watermelon industry. You tell everyone you can that you’re a successful watermelon grower. You tell people at party’s hoping to get laid. Problems is; where’s the two extra dollars coming from? Where’s the theory of evolution – survival of the fittest. It’s all crap and sadly it’s all too real.
But don’t dispar. We can all fight this. If you’re at a party and some filmschool plastic bubble-living cry-baby tells you they’ve just finished a documentary – mungbeans, the new beginning – don’t go home with them. Laugh out loud and tell them;
Leon says you’re a big wanker.
