Finding Film Ideas

Forget fiction.
Real-life is far more interesting. The shit I could tell you…
People talk about writer’s-block. I should actually say; cry-babies. Because in the world I live in I’m surrounded with the most unbelievable stories. The only block I get is trying to shield myself from the collaterally damaging white-wash. Sometimes I have to slap myself silly just to prove I’m not dreaming.
Like a mate of mine helps pay the rent by dressing up as a nurse watching over her mate who beats this guy with a whip – and he’s dressed in a girl’s school uniform.
I’m not making this up.
So, maybe that’s a real-life Blue Velvet re-make but there are heaps of good story ideas out there.
One I found;
On September 8, 1934 the luxury liner Morro Castle ran aground on the beach at Asbury Park.
The 11,520 ton vessel was carrying wealthy passengers from Havana to New York City. It had an infamous reputation; reports of drug and Cuban rum smuggling. Illegal immigrants were also commonly smuggled into the country aboard the ship.
The final journey was shrouded in mystery. While accounts vary, it is known that the ship's captain, Robert Wilmott died mysteriously while taking a bath and was perhaps murdered. Shortly afterwards a fire broke out and swept throughout the ship.
It was about 6 miles off the New Jersey coast, being pummelled by gale force winds when the order was given to abandon ship.
Crew members commandeered life boats, leaving helpless passengers onboard to fend for themselves.
As rescue ships raced to the area the ship drifted to shore, landing on the beach.
133 passengers died in the disaster.
Mystery, murder, drugs, Cuba – throw in some sex and it’s a hit. Ok, so there might be some budgetary restrictions, but that’s a great story and it’s real – kills Titanic.
Until next time and happy film-making.
