Bastard Fine
December 7th 2006 08:09
On a recent filming expedition I encountered the nemesis of all film-makers.
The parking fine.
Not just any fine - $180 and a parking sign you’d need a substance-abusing lawyer to decipher.
Ok, it was after the shoot and it was outside the pub we’d barrelled into – filming is thirsty work.
But $180 for a parking infringement?
The City of Sydney Council – keeping the fascist flame burning.
Anyway, I was filming Sydney artist Ruark Lewis who describes himself as expensive and hard to work with. Neither of which I found him to be. A friend of mine, Angela Stretch had a script and wanted a short film for an exhibition she’s holding, interspaces – only too happy to help. Any opportunity to make a film. Because it’s about making films not the money – although with the parking fine I’m financially heading backwards on this one.
Anyway, when you’re faced with people who don’t normally act, approach is the key to success. People are naturally self-conscious and nervous. It’s up to you – the film-maker, to set them at ease and guide them into a great performance.
Duke and I do it all the time. We find normal everyday people and extract beautiful performances.
Sometimes I sit back and think; is it us or are we just really lucky in finding people that can act.
Oh Yeah, I’m $180 lucky.
Until next time and happy film-making.
