Aussie car films with go-go
July 13th 2007 04:54
Ask most film-school crybabies about doing a film with cars and they’ll go all red in the face and say something like;
“…but where’s the sophistication…”
So sad. But you’re right, why would you talk to one in the first place.
Mad Max is a western. It has the same story, but instead of riding horses they are riding motor-cycles and cars. People say the western’s dead, but it’s not; it’s become the car action film.
George Miller, 1979
I love car films.
Here are some of the greats Australia has thrown at the big screen;
The Cars That Ate Paris, 1974
The FJ Holden, 1977
Mad Max, 1979
Mad Max II, 1981
Running on Empty, 1982
Midnight Spares, 1983
The Big Steel, 1990
The Goddess of 67, 2000
I just emailed Steve Courtney who put together the Chevy, “Blown 57” that starred in Running on Empty. Now there’s a guy with go-go. Loves his work and is still going strong.
We sell over one million new cars a year in Australia but can only manage 8 films about them – where’s the humanity…
Until next time and happy film-making.
